Configuring Secondary MX Records for cPanel-Hosted Email
Normally, when you add a domain to your reseller account, cPanel will also handle mail for that domain. It is good practice to specify a secondary MX server, which means if the primary server is unavailable, mail will queue in the secondary MX server until the primary server is available.
Your reseller account is already configured to use mx2.yourdomain.com.au as the secondary MX server, so the only thing you need to do for this to work is ensure you have an 'A' record set up at your domain as follows:
mx2 14400 IN A 119.9.52.25
Sometimes, the domain will handle its mail externally, such as an on-site Microsoft Exchange server. In this instance, you can use the primary server as the secondary MX server.
Configure Secondary MX Server for External Mail Servers
- Login to WHM using the username and password you have been provided
- Go to DNS Functions > Edit DNS Zone and choose your domain name
- Locate the 'A' record for the 'mail' name, and change the IP address to the IP of the domain's mail server
- Locate the 'MX' record with the highest priority number — this is the secondary MX record — and change its name to domain.com.au. (the domain you are configuring — be sure to include the dot at the end!)
- Under Email Routing, choose the option "Backup Mail Exchanger" (this tells cPanel to not deliver mail locally but hold it in the mail queue if required)
- Save
