Add a TXT to your DNS for a domain name Print

To add a TXT record to your domain name's DNS (for example, a verification record for a service you are using), follow these instructions.

Prerequisites

  • You'll either need access to our Client Area or know your cPanel login details. If you're not sure how to access our Client Area, click here for instructions.
  • Your domain name needs to be associated with a hosting account. If there's no hosting account, contact us to arrange a DNS Only account for this purpose.

Accessing DNS Management

  • First, access cPanel for your hosting account. You can do this through our Client Area by looking for the hosting account under "Your Active Products/Services" and clicking the Log in to cPanel button beside it. Or, if you know your cPanel login details, you can login directly.
  • Once inside cPanel, go to Zone Editor, click Manage beside the domain
  • At this point, it would be a good idea to click the "TXT" link at the top to filter existing records by this type, and check that you're not accidentally doubling-up or overriding a record that already exists
  • Click the arrow beside the Add Record button in the top-right, and choose "Add TXT Record".
  • From there, enter the details as:
    • Name: enter your domain in the format example.com.au (it will automatically add the required dot to the end)
    • TTL: leave as its default number
    • Type: leave as "TXT"
    • Record: paste in the value given to you (do not surround it with quote marks)
  • Click Save Record

Adding long TXT Records

You need to manually break the record up before reaching the 255 character.

Example TXT Record:

"v=spf1 include:_spf.example.com ~all This is a very long text record that exceeds the 255 character limit for a single string in DNS. It continues with more information and needs to be broken up into multiple segments. Each segment must be within the 255 character limit."

Split into parts:

Part one

v=spf1 include:_spf.example.com ~all This is a very long text record that exceeds the 255 character limit for a single string in DNS. It continues with more information and needs to be broken up into multiple segme

Part two

nts. Each segment must be within the 255 character limit.

Now you can add them into the TXT String box:

  • Click the arrow beside the Add Record button in the top-right, and choose "Add TXT Record".
  • From there, enter the details as:
    • Name: enter your domain in the format example.com.au (it will automatically add the required dot to the end)
    • TTL: leave as its default number
    • Type: leave as "TXT"
    • Click: on "Add TXT string to record"
    • Record: In the first box paste Part one, in the second box paste Part two
  • Click Save Record
