Promoting your website Print

Here is a quick-start guide on the essential things you should do to promote your website online.

Organic Search Engine Rankings

When somebody does a search for a topic relevant to your website (such as a service you provide), search engines such as Google will include a relevant page from your website in its search results, together with other websites that are also relevant.

Ideally, you want your website to appear on the first page of those results.

To do this, you need to focus efforts on three areas:

Relevant Content

Each page on your website should use the same sort of wording that a prospective customer would use when searching for your products or service. Ideally, each page would focus on a single theme or topic, such as one service, or one product. Write comprehensive text to make the page's information more valuable and cover the keywords a visitor may use relevant to that topic.

Think about what other keywords a visitor may search for that do not have a dedicated page on your website, and consider adding new pages to cover those keywords. This could be in the form of dedicated product and service pages, informative articles, blog posts, or FAQs.

Links From Other Websites

Search engines want to rank well-respected and authoritative content higher. It does this by considering the number and quality of other websites that link to your website.

When other websites link to yours, this tells the search engines that your website contains valuable, worthwhile or interesting content, and your rankings will increase accordingly.

You should look for industry associations, directories, suppliers’ and customers’ websites, influencer blogs, review websites, and social media for opportunities to have your website linked from other websites.

Local Business Search

For a location-based business, Google will display local businesses above its ordinary search results, and include contact details and map locations. This is the most important part of the search results to have visibility for this type of business.

Once you have claimed and updated your Google Local Business Listing, you can take specific actions to improve your rankings for location-based searches.

One of the most critical factors is the number and quality of reviews that your business has online. Google in particular will look at the reviews people have left on your Google Local Business Listing, so you should encourage customers to leave reviews here. In addition, reviews from other websites (Yelp, TripAdvisor, Facebook, etc.) will be aggregated and considered.

Paid Search Engine Rankings

You can run a pay-per-click advertising campaign with Google, Facebook, and other networks, where you choose which keyword phrases you'd like to advertise for, and then pay each time a visitor clicks on your ad. On Google, these ads are displayed at the top and bottom of search results pages, and have very high visibility and response rates. If you need help advertising on Google, please reach out to us.

Social Media

Consider if Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, LinkedIn, Pinterest, and other social platforms might allow you to engage with your target audiences. Building an organic network of followers is an excellent strategy if you are able to produce high-quality, interesting content specific to each of these platforms. You can also advertise on many of these platforms to reach a wider audience.
